This Indenture made this 1st day of October in the year eighteen hundred and forty nine between Thos V Webb and F Wilson and Richard Nash overseers of the Poor in St Brides' Parish Norfolk County Virginia of the one part and William Jones of said parish of the other part: Witnesseth that the said Thos V. Webb and F Wilson and Richard Nash overseers of the Poor and F Wilson by virtue of an order of the county Court of Norfolk County bearing date the 16th day of July 1849 have put placed and bound and by these presents do put place and bind Essex Sparrow a free negro of the age of sixteen years on the 31st day of March 1849 to be an apprentice with him the said William Jones to dwell from the date of these presents twenty one years according to Act of Assembly in that case made and provided. By and during all which time and term the said Essex Sparrow shall the said William Jones his said master well and truly serve in all lawful business as the said Essex Sparrow shall be put unto by his said master according to the power wit and ability of him the said Essex Sparrow and honestly and obediently in all things shall behave himself towards his said master and all the members of his said family. And the said William Jones for his part for himself his executors and administrators doth hereby promise and covenant to and with the said overseers of the Poor and every of them and their successors for the time being and to and with the said Essex Sparrow that he the said William Jones shall the said Essex Sparrow in the craft mystery and occupation of a House-servant after the best manner that he can or may teach instruct and inform or cause to be taught instruct and informed as much as thereunto belongeth or in anywise appertaineth.
