Know all Men by these presents that we William Jones and Edward E Hosier are held and firmly bound to the Commonwealth of Virginia in the sum of three hundred and fifty nine dollars and fifty eight cents for the true payment whereof we bind ourselves severally and jointly our several and joint heirs executors and administrators firmly by these presents. The Condition of the above obligation is such that whereas the County Court of Norfolk County by an order made on the 16th day of July 1849 directed the Overseers of the Poor to bind Essex Sparrow a free negro adjudged to be sixteen years of age on the 31st March 1849 to the aforesaid William Jones to learn the occupation of a House servant until he arrives to the age of twenty one years, he paying thirty five dollars per annum until the last year of his servitude and then pay to the said Essex fifty dollars. Now therefore if the said William Jones shall account for and pay the value of the aforesaid services of the said Essex Sparrow according to Law then this obligation to be null and void otherwise to remain in full force and virtue. Sealed with our seals and dated this first day of October in the year eighteen hundred and forty nine. William Jones X his mark (Seal) Edward E Hosier (Seal) Teste S Wheeler
