This Indenture made this 18th day of May in the year 1857, between Jane Hill of the County of Southampton, mother of Robert Hill an infant free person of colour, under the age of fourteen years, of the one part and Thomas H Urquhart of the said County of the other part. witnesseth; that the said Jane Hill by and with the allowance and consent of the County Court of Southampton County, by an order of the said Court made on the same day above stated, in pursuance of the statute in that case made and provided, has put & placed and does by these presents, put and place the said Robert Hill etc (child of the said Jane Hill) aged five years, apprentice to the said Thomas H Urquhart, with him to dwell and serve from the day of the date of these presents, until the said apprentice shall accomplish his full age of twenty one years And the said Jane Hill, for herself, her heirs & does hereby covenant promise and agree to and with the said Thomas H Urquhart his heirs, Executors & etc that the said Robert Hill, the said Urquhart his master, shall and will faithfully serve in all lawful business according to his ability, and honestly, orderly and obediently in all things [illegible] and behave himself towards his said master during the said time of his apprenticeship. And the said Thomas H Urquhart for himself, his heirs executors &c [etc.] does covenant, promise and agree to and with the said Jane Hill, her executors by these presents, that he the said Urquhart shall and will teach and instruct the said Robert Hill or cause him to be instructed and taught in the art and mystery of farming and cultivating the soil, in the best way & manner during the said term, and will during the term aforesaid find, provide and allow unto the said Robert Hill competent and sufficient meat drink, apparel, lodging, washing, and all things necessary and fit for an apprentice; and also will pay to the said Jane Hill the sum of fifteen dollars per annum from the time the said Robert Hill arrives at the age of ten years for the balance of the term of the said apprenticeship, except and save the last year through, for which said year the said
