This Indenture, made the 8th day of August in the year of our Lord one Thousand Eight Hundred and thirty four BETWEEN Joseph Slagh & James P. Riley Gentlemen, Overseers of the Poor of the County of Frederick of the one part, and Sarah Bowers of the said County of the other part, WITNESSETH, that the said Overseers, in consequence of the authority in them vested by law, have put, placed and bound, and by these presents do put place and bind William Butler a molato boy unto the said Sarah Bowers with her to dwell and serve after the manner of an Apprentice, until he shall arrive at and attain the full age of fifteen years, (he the said William being ten years old, the 15th day of March last past) during all which time the said Apprentice his said mistress well and faithfully shall serve, her secrets keep, and her lawful commands at all times readily obey; hurt to his said mistress he shall not do nor willingly suffer the same to be done by others; but henceforth shall notify her thereof. The goods of his said mistress he shall not waste or embezzle, nor them lend without orders from his said mistress From the service of his said mistress he shall not at any time depart or absent himself without her permission, and in all and every thing and things he shall truly, honestly and faithfully demean himself towards his said mistress as a good and faithful Apprentice ought to do. IN CONSIDERATION WHEREOF the said Sarah Bowers on her part and behalf doth hereby covenant, promise and agree, to and with the said Overseers and their successors, that she will constantly find and provide for the said Apprentice good wholesome diet, cloathing, and cleanly washing and lodging, suitable to his degree during the whole term of servitude, and that within the said term, and at the expiration thereof pay and allow the sum of for his freedom dues.
