This Indenture made the Second day of November in the year One Thousand Eight Hundred and Fifty-three between Joseph Long Overseer of the poor of the County of Frederick, of the one part and Martin R Kaufman of the said County farmer, of the other part. Witnesseth; That the said Joseph Lang Overseer of the poor as aforesaid acting with the allowance and approbation of the County Court of Frederick County; and in pursuance of an order of the Said Court to the effect, made and entered on the Sixth day of June One Thousand Eight Hundred and Fifty three have put and bound and do by these presents put and bind John Newton Fletcher and Edmond Fletcher, free negroes, of the said County (who have to be provided for and assisted by the Overseer of said County) and being of the ages of Ten years the Fourth of August next and Nine years the Thirteenth of August next to be apprentices to the said Martin R Kaufman to learn he business of a farmer, and with him to dwell and remain and serve untill they the said John Newton Fletcher and Edmond Fletcher shall attain their full ages of Twenty one years, during all which time they the said John Newton Fletcher and Edmond Fletcher their Master faithfully shall serve and obey, his secrets keep and his lawful commands willingly do and perform and shall not absent themselves from the service of their said Master day or night without his leave, but shall in all things as faithful apprentices behave themselves towards their Master and all his family during the said term.
