This Indenture, made the 11th day of January in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and fifty four BETWEEN William H. Streit one of the Overseers of the Poor of the Corporation of Winchester, of the one part, and Christopher Funk of the same Corporation, of the other part: Witnesseth, That the said Overseer, in consequence of the powers in him vested by law, and pursuant to an order of the Court of the Corporation aforesaid, dated January Term 1854, have put, placed, and bound, and by these presents do put, place, and bind William Banks a free negro boy son of Eliza Banks unto the said Christopher Funk with him to dwell, and serve after the manner of an apprentice, until he shall arrive at and attain the full age of Twenty one years, (the said William Banks being Six years old the 1st day of January last past,) during all which time the apprentice his said Master the said C. Funk well and faithfully shall serve, his secrets keep, and his lawful commands at all times readily obey; hurt to the said Christopher Funk shall not do, nor willingly suffer the same to be done by others; but henceforth shall notify him thereof. The goods of the said Christopher Funk shall not waste or embezzle, nor lend them without orders from the said Christopher Funk from the service of the said C. Funk shall not at any time depart or absent himself without his permission, and in all and every thing and things he shall truly, honestly, and faithfully demean himself towards the said Christopher Funk as a good and faithful apprentice ought to do.
IN CONSIDERATION WHEREOF, the said Christopher Funk on his part and behalf, doth hereby covenant, promise, and agree, to and with the said Overseers and their successors, that he will constantly find and provide for said apprentice good wholesome diet, clothing, and cleanly washing and lodging, suitable to his degree, during the whole term of servitude, and that he will teach, or cause the said apprentice to be taught, the trade of a Brick & Stone Mason and to pay to the mother of said boy the said Eliza Banks for the 13 &14 years of his apprenticeship Ten dollars for each year and the last year pay to the said boy the sum of Twenty five dollars.
