This Indenture MADE THE 25th day of April In the year of our Lord 1844 Between Jacob Rohr Sr. one of the Overseer's of the Poor of the first District in the County of Rockingham of the one part, and David Paulser of the other part witnesseth, that the said Overseers of the Poor by virtue of an Order of the County aforesaid bearing date December Court in the year 1843 has placed and bound and by these presents doth place and bind Harvey Lewis a free boy of colour son of Polly Lewis of the age of 11 years on the 15th March last to be an Apprentice with him the said David Paulser and as an Apprentice with him the said David Paulser to dwell from the date of these presents, until the said Harvey Lewis shall arrive, and come to the age of Twenty one years, according to the Act of the General Assembly in that case made and provided. For and during all which time and term the said Harvey Lewis shall the said David Paulser well and faithfully serve in all such lawful business as the said Harvey Lewis shall be put unto by his said Master according to the Power, Wit and Ability of the said Harvey Lewis and the said Harvey Lewis honestly and obediently in all things behave towards the said David Paulser, and honestly and orderly towards the rest of the Family of him the said David Paulser And the said David Paulser for himself his Executors and Administrators doth hereby promise and covenant to and with the said Overseer of the Poor and his Successor in office for the time being, that the said Apprentice shall in the Craft, Mystery and Occupation of a Farmer which he the said David Paulser now useth, after the best manner that he can, or may teach, instruct, and inform, or cause to be taught, instructed and informed, as much as thereunto belongeth, or in any wise appertaineth, and that the said David Paulser shall also find and allow unto the said Apprentice sufficient meat, drink, appearel, washing, lodging, and all other things needful or meet, for an Apprentice during the term aforesaid: and will moreover pay for the said Boy $100.00 viz. to the mother of the said boy the sum of $7 per year for 9 years and then the sum of $37.00 to the said boy at the Expiration of the aforesaid Term.
