[newspaper clipping] WOMEN CAN VOTE IN TRIADELPHIA ACCORDING TO CHARTER GIVEN TOWN BY VIRGINIA. OLD LOCAL GOVERNMENT NEVER CHANGED BY THE NEW STATE. WOMEN COULD RUN TOWN AS THEY HAVE MAJORITY, BUT NEVER THOUGHT OF IT.

The town of Triadelphia has one of the most unique charters in this part of the country. The charter was granted to the town in the '50's by the state of Virginia and the women are given the power to cast their ballots at municipal elections the same as the men. On one occasion a few years ago several of the women became acquainted with the facts and threatened to cause the men a great deal of trouble. They got out and worked and were going to vote, but were persuaded not to by their better halves. But for a time they caused a great deal of worry among the men. They seem to have overlooked the matter this year and are not doing anything.

The town council set last Friday evening as the date for the holding a suggestion meeting, but the men failed to turn out with the result that the suggestion meeting had to be postponed till Tuesday evening. Several of the citizens who are taking an interest in the town threatened to call the women out if the men failed to attend the meeting and they felt sure that they would be able to suggest candidates for the offices. The men must have awakened to the fact that they might be ousted entirely and the reins of office put in the hands of the women as they turned out in good numbers.

According to the charter the suggestion meeting is just held for the purpose of suggesting candidates for the council, six of whom are to be elected at the regular election which is held in January. At the first meeting of the new council, they elect from their number a mayor and a recorder. The tenure of office is for the term of one year.

This town is one of the oldest in this part of the country, yet it has never made any great advancement. The citizens are afraid to make a move for anything that is for the advancement of the town for fear of making enemies. Some time ago, some of the citizens endeavored to organize a volunteer fire department in the town for their own protection, but a number of others were against it with the result that the town is without any protection. Some of the women have threatened to enter the limelight and push matters themselves, and if this is done, perhaps the men will awaken to the fact that they are away behind.
