(1) Virginia to wit Pleas before the Worshipfull the Justices of the County Court of Campbell the 8th day of May 1815 in the 30th year of the Commonwealth Be it Remembered that at a Court heretofore held for said County the 13th day of November 1797 On the Petition of Isaac a negroe man slave said to be the property of Peter Corbell a resident of the State of South Carolina leave is granted him to bring suit in forma pauperis against the said Corbell for his freedom and John Dabney Gentlemen is allotted by the Court as council to prosecute this suit on behalf of the said Isaac and it is further ordered that the said Isaac remain in custody of the sheriff till the said Corbell give security according to Law, on hearing the parties by their attorneys which Petition was in the following words and figures to wit, To the worshipfull Court of Campbell County hereby sheweth unto your worships your petitioner Isaac a negro man that some time in the year 1790 or 1791 he resided in the state of South Carolina was slave belonging to a certain Peter Corbell that the said Peter Corbell sent him into this state with a certain Thomas Bragg but without selling him to the said Bragg and that he has since continued in this state under the direction of person appointed by the said Peter Corbell the said Corbell receiving his hire and being and being still a resident of South Carolina your petitioner conceives that under the act of assembly in such cases made and provided he is entitled to his freedom he prays that Council may be assigned.
