To the honble the Speaker and House of Burgesses in General assembly met together the Petition of sundry persons residing on or near to the Fluvanna and Rivanna rivers humbly sheweth That from the confluence of the s'd rivers to the nearest ferry on the Fluvanna rivers, upwards, is about twenty three miles; that from the s'd confluence to the nearest ferry on the Rivanna river, upwards, is about thirty miles; and from [these?] confluence to the nearest ferry on the main river, downwards, is about eight miles. That your petitioners residing on and near to the said rivers and having occasion to go to Manchester or Warwick their principal mart on the South side of the main river or to Richmond their principal mart on the North side of the main river, in order to cross either of the s'\d rivers Rivanna or Fluvanna at a ferry are obliged to go directly up the same distance before mentioned; that your petitioners residing on the North or South side of both the s'd rivers or of the main river and having occasion to go across the country are obliged to go to one of the ferries beforementioned which are thirty or forty miles apart; that a very great number of poor people passing with their families from the Northern to the Southern colonies falling into the road leading down the country and known by the name of the Three-notched road, are at present obliged to turn from the said road fourteen miles and after crossing the nearest ferry beforementioned on the main river to go up the same distance before they fall into their route again which distances might be saved to them by a passage across the s'd river at the fork: That this would also relieve your petitioners residing within and near to the s'd rivers from their difficulties before stated. Your Petitioners therefore pray that a ferry may be established from the point of the fork of the s'd rivers Rivanna and Fluvanna to the lands late the property of Philip Mayo deceased on the South side the s'd Fluvanna; from the s'd point of the fork to the lands of Samuel Martin on the North side the s'd Rivanna and from the lands of the s'd Samuel Martin on the North side the s'd Rivanna to the s'd lands late of the s'd Mayo on the South side the s'd rivers, with such rates of ferriage as to this shall seem reasonable & your Petitioners as in duty bound shall ever pray
