Thomas Evans and Joseph Johnson Were Sold
Thomas Evans and Joseph Johnson were African American men who were arrested and jailed in Norfolk in February 1830 for being runaway slaves. They were advertised as runaways, but after no owners came forth to claim the men, they were held for a year and then sold at auction. The auction was held on March 28, 1831, and on April 16, the account was recorded by the Norfolk Court deputy clerk, listing the payments due for the men's upkeep for the past year. Docketing on the account showed that it was paid in full by June 16, 1831.
