William Alexander Wrote to the General Assembly on the Behalf of Benjamin Franklin

This letter was an enclosure in a December 14, 1789, letter from Governor Beverley Randolph (1754–1797) to the Speaker of the House of Delegates, concerning the request of Benjamin Franklin (1706–1790) for compensation for supplies that Franklin had provided to a Virginia printer during the Revolutionary War. Also enclosed was a October 12, 1789, certificate from a printer explaining that his former partner had received printing materials from Philadelphia. Governor Randolph stated that “from the character of the Claimant there can be little doubt of its Justice.” General Assembly records do not indicate that the state compensated Franklin.
