George Blaisdell Wrote Home from Camp Griffin

George Blaisdell was a resident of Plainfield, Vermont. He enlisted with the 4th Vermont Infantry Regiment, Company G, in August 1861. While in Virginia, he wrote this letter to a friend back in Vermont. His depiction of army life included descriptions of the food and accommodations given the soldiers. He also described some of the countryside and regretted the damage that the army had wreaked on the surrounding forests and fields. Blaisdell died of disease soon after, on November 28, 1861.
