“Stonewall” Jackson Issued a General Order

The leadership skills and strategic acumen of Confederate General Thomas Jonathan “Stonewall” Jackson (1824–1863) earned him lasting fame. On September 3, 1862, Jackson's divisions began to march northward from Chantilly, Virginia, for an invasion of Maryland as part of Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia. On September 6 the troops arrived and camped near Frederick, Maryland. The copy of Jackson's general order for marching displays his disdain for unorganized marching. He gave instructions for the conduct of the men while marching, which included the arrest of stragglers.
