David James Castleman was born on 22 November 1880. He was the son of David James Castleman (1825-1897) and Arabella Sledge (1837-1920) of Greensboro, Alabama. Castleman served a captain with the Engineering Corps in France during World War I. A majority of his time was spent supervising crane operations in the port city of Saint-Nazaire. Shortly after his return home, he married Mary Pride Jones (1878-1978) on 24 July 1919. They resided in New York City and Jamaica, Queens, New York, where he was employed as an engineer with General Electric. Castleman died on 12 May 1932. He and his wife are both buried in Arlington National Cemetery.
