Commissioner's Office, Halifax CoHo Va Oct. 9th 1855 To the Circuit Court of Halifax County In pursuance of an order of said Court bearing date the 3rd day of May 1855 and hereto annexed you commissioner has made inquiry as to the names of the slaves emancipated by the will of Philip E. Vass dec'd, who were living at the death of said Vass, as to which of the said slaves have since died and the descendants now living of such as have died and reports to the Court that he has ascertained the names of the said slaves living at the testators death to be - Jacob, Patsey, Merriweather, Mary and Matilda - that Mary one of the slaves aforesaid has since died and that her descendants are the above named Matilda and her three children Mary, Harriet Matilda and Peter aged respectively thirteen, eight and six years. Your commissioner further reports that he caused to appear before him on the 6th of Oct. 1855 the abovenamed Matilda (an adult woman) and has ascertained that she the said Matilda elects to be removed to and settled in some state of this Union - That he caused the aforesaid Patty (an adult woman) to appear before him on the 8th day of Oct 1835 and has ascertained that she the said Patty also elects to be removed to and settled in some state of this union - that he caused the abovenamed Merriweather (an adult man) to appear before him on the 8th of Oct 1835 and has ascertained that he the said Merriweather elects to be removed to and settled in some state of this union - that he in likemanner caused the said Jacob to appear before him on the 8th of Oct. 1855 and has ascertained that he the said Jacob also elects to be removed to
