The deposition of William M Cabaniss taken in the clerks office of Halifax County on the 10 day of Sept. 1849 according to notice to be read as evidence in a suit now pending in the Circuit Superior Court of Law & Chancery for the County of Halifax in which John R Bennett & Eliza M his wife as adm'rs of Abner C Shelton are plaintiffs and Francis L. Royall is defendant This deponent being first sworn according to law deposes and says That the book exhibited marked on the back "Negro Trade book Commenced in Virginia March 1st 1836" with a X under neath, has a receipt dated 1st March 1836 for Twenty two hundred & thirty three Dollars and seventy five Cents, and also Two hundred & nine Dollars to Wm Royall is signed in the hand writing of Mrs Eliza M Shelton now Mrs Eliza M Bennett. And that the agreement dated 1st march 1836 is signed in the hand writing of Wm Royall Francis L Royall and Eliza M Shelton now Eliza M Bennett. The entry of Forty One hundred & ninety five Dollars & three Cents against Wm Royall is in the hand writing of Wm Royall. The account raised in the same book against Francis L Royall is in the hand writing of said Wm Royall & the first entry in said account. The balance of the writing in
