The first day of December 1817 John Lancaster Jr. came before me one of the commonwealths justices of the peace for the county of Cumberland Va & made oath that about the middle of August 1817 Marmaduke Ganneway of said county delivered to Majr Jno Gannaway his Negroe Man Jacob, whom he delivered to his brother in Tennessee. The circumstances are this as came within my knowledge the sd MD Gannaway purchased the above Slaves & proving to be a bad character, he thought it to be expedient to change him for another Slave Shortly after the delivery of Sd Slave to my brother in Tennessee he made the exchange where the Slave exchanged for has been ever since working at the carpenters trade. I further certify that the Sd Jacob was a Negroe of a bad character & was frequently Stealing & Running away, & that MD Gannaway paid considerable Sums of Money for Jailors fees & otherwise. Sworn to before me the day & date above written John Holman Senr I Josiah Lancaster of Cumberland Cty Va certify on my honour, that I am acquainted with sd MD Gannaway & at the time of his owning the above named Slave & knew him to be a Rogue & Runnaway this 2nd Decr 1817
