Brunswick County and District to Wit

Henry Morris executor of the last will and testament of Susannah Simmons deceased, who was executrix of the last will & testament of Henry Simmons Senr. deceased, plaintiff, complains of Washington Croft, defendant in custody &c of a Plea that he the said defendant render to him the said plaintiff executor as aforesaid three negroe slaves, to wit, one negroe woman slave named Liddy of the value of Eighty Pounds - one negroe boy slave named Jesse, of the value of Sixty Pounds, on negroe boy slave named Billy of the value of Sixty Pounds, also one sorrell horse of the value of Fifteen Pounds, also one gold ring of the value of One pounds four shillings and three pewter dishes, & one stone butter-pot, thirty shillings set of weaving harness which said negroe slaves, horse, ring pewter dished & stone butter pot weaving harness he the said defendant unjustly detains from him the said plaintiff executor as aforesaid, for that whereas the said plaintiff on the 20th day of november in the year of our Lord, one thousand seven hundred and ninety three at the parish of Saint Andrews in the county aforesaid, was Possessed of the negroe slaves & other Property aforesaid to wit of one negroe woman slave named Liddy of the value of Eighty Pounds - one negroe boy slave named Billy of the value of Sixty pounds, one sorrel horse of the value of fifteen pounds, one gold ring of the value of twenty four shillings & three pewter dishes & one Butter pot of the value of thirty shillings as of his own proper salves & goods & chattels as executor of the said Susannah Simmons deceased who was executrix of the said Henry Simmons deceased; and being so thereof possessed, the said plaintiff executor as aforesaid, afterwards to wit, on the day & year last mentioned at the parish & county aforesaid casually lost the said slaves, goods & chattels out of his hands & possession, which said slaves, & goods & chattels, afterwards to wit on the said day of [blank] in the year aforesaid, at the parish & County aforesaid, came to the hands and possession of the said Washington Croft the defendant by finding the same, whereby the said defendant then was & now is possessed thereof: yet the said Washington Croft the defendant well Knowing the said negroe slaves & other goods & chattels to be the Proper negroe slaves goods & chattels of him the said plaintiff executor of the said Susannah Simmons who was executrix of the said Henry Simmons deceased, & of right to belong and appertain to the said plaintiff executor as aforesaid, but devising & fraudulently intending, craftilly & subtilly to deceive & defraud the said plaintiff executor as aforesaid of the said negroe slaves, goods & chattels, hath not delivered the said negroe slaves goods & chattels, nor any of them, to the said plaintiff, although the said defendant hath been often thereunto requested, but the said defendant hath hitherto refused & still does refuse the same to the plaintiff to deliver. & the defendant hath hitherto detained unjustly the said negroe slaves & goods & chattels from the said plaintiff executor as aforesaid,
