The deposition of William Adams of Somerest County in the state of Maryland of lawful age, defereth and saith that he will hand over a negro man named Sampson on which a certain Smith Horsey informed him this deferment, was [turn?] chased by a Mr Jennings of a certain white [Simpton?] Smith of this County - That the said negro man was carried away from this place in to Virginia, [shant?] four or five years ago by Mr. Jennings and shortly thereafter eloped from the said Jennings and returned again to this County. That sometime afterwards the aforesaid Smith Horsey came up from Virginia and [illegible] the said Sampson to this deferment from twelve months at the rate of thirty dollars a year, ( the said negro being old than time run away) and informed this department that Mr. Jennings had [illegible] their negro man of the aforesaid Smith, but that it was his money that was paid
