I have [latly?] understood that your honour is appointed chief Judge of the Federal Court for the 4th. Circuit As you are the most proper Person to apply to respecting the Clerkship I have thought proper to offer myself as a Candidate for that place. I am the more Induced to this, as I am a resident I hold considerable Possessions at the [Court?] House I have spent some time in acquiring a [knowlege?] of the [Stat?] Laws [as?] of the U. States. my wish is to do the business myself, not by Deputy The only Personall [acquaintanc?] I have with you Sir was in 97. you Negotiated a Bill [dued?] by Mr. Jno. Hopkins Com of Loans Also in 98 you Assisted me in getting a Deed from Gen. Washington for 100 Shares of JR Stock to Washington Academy Would have enclosed you letters of Introduction from Mr. A Moore but as he is very unwell & not the strongest [illegible] to the [Federal?] cause.
