Lexington March 10th. 1801 Sir I have lately understood that your honour is appointed chief Judge of the Federal Court for the 4th. Circuit As you are the most proper person to apply to respecting the Clerkship I have thought proper to offer myself as a Candidate for that place. I am the more Induced to this, as I am a resident & hold considerable possessions at the Court House I have spent some time in acquiring a knowlege of the state laws as of the U. States. my wish is to do the business myself, not by Deputy The only Personall [sic] acquaintance I have with you Sir was in 97. you negotiated a Bill due by Mr. Jno. Hopkins Com of Loans Also in 98 you assisted me in getting a Deed from Gen. Washington for100 Shares of JR Stock to Washington Academy Would have enclosed you letters of Introduction from Mr. A. Moore but as he is very unwell & not the strongest [illegible] to the Federal cause.
