Wythe County Sct This day Henry Stephens came before me John Evans a Justice of the peace for said County & made oath that about the 30 day of March last he was requested by Maj Philip Gaines to go to Mrs Catrons in Cripple Creek in said county in order to qualify her to an answer in Chancery. This affiant accordingly went when he saw Maj Gaines in an out house who said that he had rented that house when he had Hagar a female person of colour formerly his Slave & her two children, that he suspected that Robert Crockett & Frederic Idle would come to take away the Negroes & that he intended not to let them take them but keep them there untill the return of Daniel Sheffey who was his counsel & that he could adopt any counsel he would give him on the subject & act accordingly. It being too late to return home after the business was done & the said Gaines having his bed in the house above mentioned this affiant went to bed then with him.
