This indenture made this 25th day of June in the year of Our Lord one thousand eight hundred and forty Nine, between John M. Foster, James G. Hodges and James H. Carney overseers of the Poor for the Parish of Portsmouth in the county of Norfolk of the one part, and Lysander H. Kingman of said county of the other part, Witnesseth that the said John M Foster, James G. Hodges and James H. Carney overseers of the Poor as aforesaid, by virtue of an order of the Court of the aforesaid county, bearing date on the 18th day of June 1849 have put, placed and bound and by these presents do put, place and bind John Wright a free negro of the age of Eight years to be an apprentice with him the said Lysander H. Kingman, and as an apprentice with him the said Lysander H. Kingman to dwell from the date of these presents, until the said John Wright shall come to the age of 21 years according to the Act of the General Assembly in that case made and provided, (the said Lysander H. Kingman having entered into bond with security to pay the annual hires according to the Act of the General Assembly). By and during all which time and term, the said John Wright shall the said Lysander H. Kingman his said master, well and faithfully serve in all such lawful business as the said John Wright shall be put to by his said master, according to the power, wit and ability of him the said John Wright, and honestly and obediently in all things shall behave himself towards his said master, and honestly and orderly towards the rest of the family of the said Lysander H. Kingman. And the said Lysander H. Kingman for his part, for himself, his executors and administrators, doth hereby promise and covenant to and with the said Overseers of the Poor, and every of them their and every of their executors and administrators
