This Indenture made and entered into this the Eighteenth day of January in the year of our Lord one thousand Eight hundred and thirty seven and in the Sixty first year of the Independence of the United States of America. Between Dardan W. Bryant[,] Davis Bryant and Augustine Pope overseers of the poor in the lower district of St. Luke parish in the County of Southampton and State of Virginia of the one part and Benjamin E. Vick of the County and State of the other part, Witnesseth that the said Dardan W. Bryant[,] Davis Bryant and Augustine Pope overseers as aforesaid have put placed and bound and these presents do put place and bind Mary Whitfield a free negro girl daughter of Ann Whitfield. Which girl was born August the 15th, 1828 to be an apprentice with him the said Benja [Benjamin] E Vick and as an apprentice with him the said Benja [Benjamin] E. Vick to dwell from the date of these presents untill she the said Mary Whitfield shall come to the age of eighteen which time will be August the 15, 1846 according to the act of the general assembly in that case made and provided by and during all which time and term the said Mary Whitfield shall the said Benja E Vick her said master well and faithfully serve in such lawful business as she the said Mary Whitfield shall be put unto by her said master according to the power wit and ability of her the said Mary Whitfield and honestly and obediently in all things shall behave herself towards her said master and honestly and obediently towards the rest of the family of the said Benja E Vick and the said Benja E Vick for his part for himself for his Executors & administrators doth hereby promise and Covenant to and with the overseers of the poor and every of them their and every of their Exors their and every of their Successors for the time being and to and with the said Mary Whitfield that the said Benja E Vick shall the Mary Whitfield in Craft Mystery and oc[c]upation of housewifery after the best manner that he can, or may teach instruct and inform or may cause it to be taught instructed and informed as much as thereunto belongeth or in any wise appertaineth and the said Benja E Vick shall also find and allow unto the said apprentice Sufficient meat drink apparel washing lodging and all other things needfull or meet for an apprentice during the term aforesaid. And will moreover pay to the said Mary Whitfield the Sum of Twelve dollars at the expiration of said term.
