This Indenture made this 8th day of February one Thousand eight hundred & thirty eight between Edward Walton & John Garratt overseers of the Poor for district No. one in the county of Cumberland of the one part & Saml Hudson of the said county of the other part Witnesseth That the said Edward Walton & John Garratt, overseers of the poor aforesaid, by Virtue of an order of the court of the County aforesaid, hearing date February 1837, have put & bound, and by these presents do place & bind John Jenkins a poor boy of colour son of Jenny Jenkins a woman of colour of the age of five years the 12th day of January 1838, (born 12th January 1833) to be an apprentice with him the said Saml. Hudson, to dwell from the date of these presents, untill the said John Jenkins shall come to the age of twenty one years, according to the act of the Gen'l Assembly in that case made and provided. By and during all which Time the said John Jenkins shall the said Saml. Hudson his Master well & faithfully serve, in all such lawfull business as the said John Jenkins shall be put unto by his said Master, according to the power & ability of him the said John Jenkins, & honestly & obediently in all things shall behave himself towards his said Master and honestly & orderly towards the rest of the family of said Saml Hudson. And the said Saml Hudson for his part, for himself his heirs &c doth hereby covenant to & with the said overseers of the Poor, and every of them & their successors for the time being, & to and with the said John Jenkins, that he the said Saml Hudson shall the said John in the art & Mistery & occupation of a farmer which he the said Sam'l Hudson is now engaged in, inform and instruct to the best of his ability, & the capacity of the said John Jenkins.
