This Indenture, made the 11th day of January in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and fifty four between William H. Short one of the Overseers of the Poor of [illegible] Cooperation of [illegible], of the one part, and Christopher [Hawk?] of the same Corporation, of the other part: Witnesseth, That the said Overseer, in consequence of the powers in him vested by law, and pursuant to an order of the Court of the Corporation aforesaid, dated January [illegible] 1854, have put, placed, and bound, and by these presents do put, place, and bind William Banks [illegible] negro boy [illegible] of [Elya?] Banks unto the said Christopher [Fawn?] with him to dwell, and serve after the manner of an apprentice, untill he shall arrive at and attain the full age of Twenty one years, (the said William Banks being Six years old the [1st?] day of January last past,) during all which time the apprentice his said Master the said C. [Hawk?] well and faithfully shall serve, his secrets keep, and his lawful commands at all times readily obey; hurt to the said Christopher [Hawk?] shall not waste or embezzle, nor lend them without orders from the said Christopher [Hawk?] from the service of the said C. [Hawk?] shall not at any time depart or absent himself without his permission, and in all and every thing and things he shall truly, honestly, and faithfully demean himself towards the said Christopher [Hawk?] as a good and faithful apprentice ought to do.
In consideration whereof, the said Christopher [Hawk?] on his part and behalf, doth hereby covenant, promise, and agree, to and with the said Overseers and their successors, that he will constantly find and provide for said apprentice good wholesome diet, clothing, and cleanly washing and lodging, suitable to his degree, during the whole term of servitude, and that he will teach, or cause the said apprentice to be taught, the [hade?] of a Brick & Stone Mason and to pay to the mother afraid boy the said [Elya?] Banks for the 13-14 years of his apprenticeship [Jowdolears?] [illegible] and the last year has to the paid boy the [sum?] of Twenty five dollars. [crossed out] within the said term, and at the expiration thereof, pay and allow [blank] the sum of twelve dollars for freedom dues [end crossed out].
