This Indenture, MADE the 9 day of March in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and fifty four BETWEEN W H Streit one of the Overseers of the Poor of Corporation of [illegible], of the one part, and William L Beuk of the same County, of the other poar: Witnesseth, That the said Overseer, in consequence of the powers in him vested by law, and pursuant to an order of the Court of the Corporation aforesaid, dated March 4 1854, hath put, placed, and bound, and by these presents dos put, place, and bind Lucinda Newman a free negro girl unto the said William L Beuk with him to dwell, and serve after the manner of an apprentice, until She shall arrive at and attain the full age of Eighteen years, (he said Lucinda being fifteen years old the day of March [first?] (1854) during all which time the apprentice her said Master well and faithfully shall serve, his secrets keep, and his lawful commands at all times readily obey; hurt to the said William L Beuk shall not do, nor willingly suffer the sams to be done by others; but henceforth shall notify him thereof. The goods of the said William L Beuk shall not waste of embezzle, nor lend them without orders from the said William L Beuk from the service of the said William L Beuk shall not at any time depart or absent her self without his permission, and in all and every thing and things she shall truly, honestly, and faithfully demean her self towards the said William L Beuk as a good and faithful apprentice ought to do. IN CONSIDERATION WHEREOF, the said William L Beuk on his part and behalf, doth hereby covenant, promise, and agree, to and with the said Overseer and his successors that he will constantly find and provide for said apprentice good wholesome diet, clothing, and cleanly washing and lodging suitable to her degree, during the whole term of servitude, and that he will teach, or cause the said apprentice to be taught, the business of a house servant, and pay to the mother of said child one dollar per year during her two first years of her apprenticeship and to the said Lucinda Twenty dollars at her [illegible] of the last year of her apprenticeship.
