Sir Whereas it was my unhappy misfortune to be Accusd of a Misdemeanor, by one of the Grandest Villians then Existant, and as I have been so unfortunate as to fall into the hands of the Civil Power have since found means to Extricate myself, and have Just Returnd home, with a hope of living again in Peace But have since been informd that it is the intention of some People to involve me in Troubles again, and as it is an Old saying to give a Dog an ill name and hang him, I have taken this Resolution, of Selling and Disposing of my Effects and to leave the Country, in Order to which, it seems Necessary, to Petition your Goodness to Grant me a Permitt for twenty Days to Settle my affairs in, without Molestation, by doing of which you will Enable me to Depart in Peace which is the Earnest Desire of Your Very Humble Servt Ben Cook 1st Jany 1779
