Sir Whereas it was my unhappy misfortune to be Accusd of a Misdemeanor, by one of the Grandest Villians then Existant, and as I have been so fourtunate as to fall into the hands of the Civil Power have since found means to Extricate myself, and habe Just Returnd home, with a hope of living again in Peace But have since been informd that it is the intention of some Peopleto involve me in Troubles again, and as it is an Old saying to give a Dog an ill name and hang him, I have to then this Reselection, of Selling and Disposing of my Effects and to have the Country , in Order to which, it seems Necessary, to Petition your Goodness to Grant me a Permit for twenty Days to Settle my affairs in, without Molestation, by doing of which you will Enable me to Depart in Peace which is the Earnest Desire of Your Very Humble Servt Ben Cook 1st Jany 1779
