The deposition of Thomas Poone taken at Halifax [illegible] Virginia in the Court house of Halifax County (in [illegible] of notice) on the 24th day of april 1858- to be read as evidence on behalf of the plaintiff on the trial of a suit in [illegible] now pending in the Circuit Court of Halifax in which Samuel Pate Admr of Absalom Pate [illegible] is plaintiff and Robert Moore is defendant-. The defendant being [illegible] only [illegible] [illegible] and says- 1 Question by Plff's counsel: Where do you reside? Answer: I live in the town of Milton North Carolina Question by same: State what you know in regard to the existence of a partnership for the purchase and sale of negroes between Absalom Pate (now dead) and Robert Moore of Halifax Co. VA Answer: Absalom Pate, [illegible] son of Samuel Pate of Halifax County Virginia and Robert Moore of the same county and state, [illegible] [illegible] engaged in the purchase and sale of negroes, in the fall of 1857 being partners in said [illegible] under the [illegible] and style of Pate and Moore, as they both admitted to me at that time. Question by same: State all that you know in regard to any transactions between the said [illegible] of Pate & Moore [illegible] certain George Eggleston of the county of Henry VA Answer: the said Absalom Pate same time in the fall of 1857 [illegible] through Milton, he told me he had brought a lot of negroes in Henry country Virginia.
