Know all man by these presents that I Mary Davis of the Town of Alexandria in the state of Virginia, (Relief of the late Samuel Davis of said place)for divers good causes and specifically for and in consideration of the sum of one dollar to me the said Mary Davis in hand paid by Betty Davis, a negro woman slave belonging to me the said Mary Davis, have manumitted and emancipated and by these presents, do manumit and emancipate the said Betty Davis from bondage, and release and discharge her from all further service or servitude of whatever nature or kind to be rendered by her to me, my heirs, executors, administrators or Asssigns, or any other person or persons whatever claiming or pretending to claim such service, from, by, through, or under me the said Mary Davis - In witness where of I the said Mary Davis have hereunto set my hand and seal this first day of June one thousand eight hundred In presence of [various signatures] the signature acknowledges also in the presence [illegible signature] [signed] Mary Davis
