+ | Got in here last night from Brussels. I had intended returning to Paris via Luxembourg & Metz, but found the trains too uncertain. Am glad I came this way as it enabled me to go thru many miles of the battle field along the route from Lille to this place. From a point just this side of Lille up to Hazelbruch [Hazelbrouck] the country has been laid waste. we saw millions of great shell holes & miles and miles of trenches that had been blown up. Every now & then we'd see a grave planted by the side |

E.F.C. - Calais Officers Rest House and Mess. 21 April 1919 Dearest: - Got in here last night from Brussels.
