In the fall 1792 I brought up from Henrico Cty thirty-odd pounds which was due Philip B. Matthews from his Fathers Estate & William Mathews borrowed twenty-four pounds of said money among which there was one bad dollar return'd I also heard William Matthews say several times that he kept Philip B. Matthew's money in his hands for he belived [believed] that any smart sensible man might fool him out of it Mrs. Sarah Matthews replied yes they might for she could fool poor Phil out of everything he had & so might any body else that was smart. The above affidavit was sworn to before me this 13th day of May 1808. Gideon Spencer
