Notwithstanding its high sounding professions the United Nations soon passed under the control of International Finance and Commerce. just as did the Congress of Vienna and the League of Nations. With the veto power conferred upon the Kremlin, the avowed enemy of the Free States, it could not enforce peace upon the Communists and merely undertook to establish a modus vivendi with them that would permit the Free States to trade with them. Inasmuch as the Secretary of Defense has declared he knew the rulers of Red China were agents of Moscow when he undertook as Truman's ambassador to induce Kia Shek to take them into his government, it is useless to argue that our Foreign Policy was directed to the halting of Communism in Asia. The same is true with respect to Europe. Thus our Export-Import Bank has been employed to finance the commerce that has provided Russia and her Satellites either directly or indirectly with their economic needs and make possible the Cold War.
In truth it has not been the atomic bomb that has deterred a shooting war. Countless well-informed Russian born American citizens have pointed our that the Kremlin dares not call on the Russian masses to support an aggressive war lest their army revolt as 500,000 Russian troops did in 1941 when only the stupidity of Hitler saved the Kremlin from an internal revolution and enabled Stalin to purge the Russian army while reequipping it with American aid. Only the continuing aid to the U.S.S.R. and the Satellites has enabled the Kremlin to postpone the revolution that would free the Russian masses should the United States demand of its allies the embargo of trade with the Communist States, as Churchill has done in England while we are hyprocritically financing that trade.
Undoubtedly the advisers of the Administration know this, else the Civil Defense for which Congress made provision last December would not have been neglected. For although the Administration makes a scare head out of the alleged imminence of an atomic attack, the ordinary man knows today no more about what he should do in event of one than he did years ago.
Om the other hand, had the Kremlin dared resort to hostilities it would have allowed the Atlantic Pact to be implemented, or permitted Gen. Eisenhower to operate with American reenforcements in Europe. Fearing revolution above al else it has chosen the wise course of allowing the trade upon which its security depends while exhausting the intended victims with the Cold War.
Whatever the thoughtful man may thing of the relative wisdom of the proposals of Gen. MacArthur, Wedemeyer, O'Donnell, and the appealing disclosures of Mr. Johnson and Gen. Hurley, it is evident that the country has been without sound military guidance; that Secretary Acheson has dictated our military policy. Well might one old fighting soldier speak of the Joint Chiefs of Staff as trained seals without regard to their moral obligation as soldiers to safeguard the troops under them against a sordid, unconscionable, and utterly impractical novel military procedure of which military science until now has never conceived. No general worthy of the title would obey without protest orders contravening both morals and human experience. The sacrificing of our youth in obedience to diplomatic considerations dictated by financial and trade interest, at the ratio of 50 to one in favor, could only help China where the massacre of a few millions means nothing except to help the economic situation.
Aside from our unconscionable Foreign Policy and the hypocrisy of the pleas in its defense, it seems evident that when at Tokyo Gen. MacArthur pointed out the United Nations would come to naught unless the Spirit of Christ dominated the councils of the Nations he then and there made himself objectionable to an Administration that has established an all time high for immorality and graft in high office. From the first it was only a question on what pretext and how the Truman-Acheson-Marshall combine would rid itself of such an one. Thomas Jefferson in his disillusioned old age pointed out how selfish commerce, knowing no country, no passion, no principle save that of gain, had debased the American Democracy, and that it would degrade our people still more. The Perry mission to Japan soon fulfilled his gloomy prediction. While we were professing to be the friend of China and were shipping war material to the invading Japanese, the late Senator Carter Glass branded our professed neutrality as nothing but more hypocrisy. Lend-Lease demonstrated the truth of this. In truth the country has been morally degraded by lack of responsible leadership to the point that Democratic leaders themselves are exposing the orgy of immorality in which people of all classes and parties have engaged. Today even the Member of Congress from the President's home town is under indictment for dishonesty in office and his public conduct while Senator Byrd almost alone continues in vain to point out the certain financial collapse unless our fiscal policy is amended.
The truth is party principles have been abandoned by those who are merely capitalizing old party names. Thus there is but one way to save the Republic from the Trumanites. Democrats and Republicans on principle must unite as did the Whigs to take the electoral votes of their states away from the "Unfair Dealers." If this is done in the South, as urged by Byrd, the southern states can be denied to Truman and without them he cannot be reelected or dictate a successor.
But only a great crusade headed by the churches of all faiths, the Civic Associations, the Patriotic and Veterans Associations, and the thoughtful leaders of Industry and Labor, can cleanse the Auge an Stable which the United States has become. For when under our system a single political group uninspired by any principle save retaining power, has had control of the country for five terms, no matter what they call themselves, they will not enforce reforms.
Meantime, for the crimes against God and man of Yalta, the use of the atomic bomb against a defeated people, the abandonment of Kia Shek, the refusal of the Administration to purge the country and its government of Communist agents, and the sacrifice of our youth in Korea, as a nation we must pay the unavoidable penalty. The President's plea through Secretary Marshall that he has been necessarily borrowing time by compromising with the Kremlin to safeguard the country by rearming it, is a confession of his incapacity in disarming it and playing into the hands of Moscow. For who does not know we were the most powerful country on earth when his weird antics began?
In face of the various investigations, and the obvious incapacity of the Fair Dealers, let the slogan of every thoughtful and honest citizen be: "Turn the Rascals Out!" Let us stop blaming our allies for our own carefully concealed contributions to the Cold War, and wage a "Holy War" to save the Republic from those who are merely using the emergency of the Russian threat to socialize the country. We need more instead of fewer Byrds.
