The affidavit of Benedict Morris taken at the Court house on Tuesday the 3rd March 1818 agreeable to notice to be read as evidence in an injunction between R. Lewis plff & Jas Minor &c Dfts in Staunton Chy Court. The counsel for both parties being present This affiant being sworn saith that he went with Mr. Thos. Tilman in search of a negro named Will or Billy, that belonged to the Dft Minor & that they in the course of this pursuit they went to the house of the Dft Barksdale That the sd. Barksdale said that the sd. negro had never runaway but once & then when he was about to whip him for stealing & that he staid some very short time. that the sd. Barksdale sd he had sold the sd negro as agent for the other Dft, but said that he had told Mr. Lewis at the time of sale that the negro had runaway but once & that was for stealing butter & when he was about to whip him he runaway & staid some very short time perhaps 2 or 3 days - That the sd. Minor during the search told this affiant that the sd negro was of the most infamous character & committed crimes worthy of death - & that he was glad that the plff had purchased him as he could not stay in the neighbourhood.
