To the Honorable Hugh W. Shaffey, judge of the Circuit Court for Augusta County: This bill of Rebecca Ann Vickers, colored of said County, respectfully represents: that some twelve or more years ago while she was living in the County of Rockingham, she was married, by a justice of the peace, though not under a legal license, to George Washington, colored, from said County of Augusta, who was then a slave of Madison Campbell. That she herself was freeborn: that they lived there aforesaid as man & wife until in the second year of the war between the United States & the states so called Confederate States, when her said husband left & went over to the then enemy: that having heard that her said first husband had departed this life, she, in April last two years ago, was married to George Vickers (colored & a freeman), now of said County of Augusta, but then of the County of Rockingham - both marriages occurring in the eastern County: that within two weeks last past, her said first husband, to her utter surprise returned & presented himself to her:
