The answer of Paul Taylor to a bill of Complaint exhibited against him and others in the Circuit Court of Halifax County by Henry Terry. This respondent saving and reserving &c for answer to said bill or so much thereof as he is advised it is material for him to answer, answers and says that he admits the execution and delivery of the deeds of trust mentioned in said bill and for the purposes therein stated. This respondent further answering saith that the claims for which the deed of trust executed for the benefit of Henry Terry was entered into originated as follows. A certain Thomas McCargo being engaged in the purchase and sale of Negro slaves commonly called negro trading, became indebted to a certain James Bruce on the 29th day of July 1836 for the purchase of slaves to carry on his traffic aforesaid in the sum of $1650 for which the said Thomas McCargo James T. Hill and Henry Terry the plaintiff executed their bonds with this respondent as security- that said Thomas McCargo on the 28th of October 1828 being also indebted to the said James Bruce for the purchase money of a slave bought for the traffic aforesaid in the sum of $600 he together with the said Henry Terry, Howell Chastain and William Frame executed their bonds for the same with this respondent likewise as security. In the traffic aforesaid and in the purchases abovementioned this respondent charges that Henry Terry was a joint though secret partner with the said Thomas McCargo.
