Extract from the trial and conviction of Jim a slave belonging to the estate of George Byars deceased -- tried in the County Court of Smyth for burglary [&c.?]

"__ And sundry witnesses being sworn and examined and the said prisoner (Jim) in his defence fully heard, it is the opinion of the Court that he is guilty of the offence whereof he stands changed; Therefore it is considered by the Court that he be hanged by the neck until he be dead - And that execution of this judgment be made and done upon him the said Jim by the Sheriff of Smyth County on friday the 29th day of October next between the hours of ten in the forenoon and two in the afternoon of the same day, and Thereupon the said Jim is remanded to jail: The Court proceeded to ascertain the value of the said slave Jim, and upon hearing the testimony of witnesses do fix his value at siz hundred dollars to be paid to Sarah C. Byars, Executrix of George Byars deceased."
