  • Deputy Sheriff Charles “Chas” Curtis (1882-1960).  Charles C. Curtis, the son of Richard and Margaret Keith, was born on 14 October 1882 in Hampton, Virginia.  Richard Curtis served as sheriff of Elizabeth City County from 1891 to 1913.  Charles worked with his father as deputy sheriff and was appointed to complete the term of his father after he died in July 1913.  “Chas” was re-elected sheriff and served until his retirement in on 1 March 1943.  Curtis died on 3 December 1960 and is buried in St. John’s Cemetery in Hampton.
